The year 1999 was the breaking point in the statistic table. Prior to 1999 the numbers of Akitas consisted of two types (American-type Akitas and Japanese-type Akitas), but after 1999 the Akitas represented only the Japanese type. The Great Japanese Dog has its own separate statistics starting from 1999. In the beginning of the year 2006, the name of the breed changed to "American Akita" which discribes the breed better.
 
Today (February 2009) we have about 730 registered American Akitas in Finland. In reality the numbers are not equal with the statistics, as we have a lot more Akitas in this country that meet the American Akita breed standard. The reason for this is that not everybody brought their dogs to the Breed Evaluation in 1999 where it was decided whether the specimen was a Japanese Akita or an American Akita. Only 35 akitas were transferred to the Great Japanese Dog (currently American Akita) register in 1999. Thus a good number of American Akitas remained under the old breed name and they are hence not included in the Great Japanese Dog (American Akita) -statistics at all.

A total number of 258 Akitas were registered during 1989-1998. This number includes 32 dogs that were imported, the others were born in Finland.
